Kell Killian World Traveler

Home based in Cadiz Spain for 3 years, kell extensively traveled by foot, bike, train, car, and plane the Iberian peninsula.

Kell’s wife Fleming was stationed in Rota Spain and the time afforded a slower study of the culture and rhythm of Southern Spain to start. Living in downtown El Puerto de Santa Maria as an American who didn’t speak the language of an old town that primarily didn’t speak English Kell was able to explore starting small with the neighborhood carniceria, cafe, and everyday market stalls. Although polite, the locals wouldn’t acknowledge you for a talk until they had seen you multiple times. Learning to order coffee con leche at the cafe , shopping at the mart, vying for position at the seafood stalls, and ordering churros were the baby steps for future exploration.

Navigating setting up a household and getting the kids into local schools that were truly immersive the beats of lifestyles and connection to the earth, sea, and local culture bubbled up.

Sicily

Kell traded off with Sicilian expert Cynthia Nicholsen for a 17 day tour including the cous cous festival where the group went deep into ancient cous cous making and the modern dishes celebrating the local fare. A few days on the natural wine terroir combined with getting into the kitchen of both professional chefs and artisan homemakers allowed folks to feel part of the landscape. “Of course we saw the sights, ate arancini from gas stations, and had gelato in brioche for breakfast: like the locals.”

Tanzania

Kell arrived in Arusha a couple days ahead of Fleming and the Safari group and immediately went to the large Mercado whereby whole livestock alive and butchered and every kind of vegetable and pigment dyes could be seen…

Caldas de Rainha, Portugal

Jose(Joe-Se) a local doctor, and Margarita(artist) showed kell the simple life of the area. Living small, providing service to the community, insisting that kell and family stay with them at their apartment in downtown with a wood fired furnace made of stone that really warmed the space from the center throughout. Bread and local cheese before going to see Nazaré home of the largest wave.
